Scammers posing as Apple representatives have targeted Singapore residents in a coordinated scheme to siphon cryptocurrency assets, with victims losing at least S$195,000 over a fortnight.
The Police Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies have received five reports of the fraud variant since August 7, according to statements from authorities. The scam exploits victims' trust in the Apple brand by using false communications to manipulate targets into transferring digital assets to attacker-controlled wallets.
Investigators are working to establish the full scope of the operation and identify the perpetrators behind the scheme. The targeting of cryptocurrency, which offers limited recourse for fund recovery, has made the scam particularly damaging to affected victims.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited contact claiming to be from major technology companies. The scam underscores the growing risks associated with digital asset theft, particularly when criminals impersonate trusted brands to gain victim confidence.
Members of the public who have information about the incidents or suspect they may have been targeted are encouraged to report the matter to the local police or contact the Anti-Scam Centre for assistance.
