India's smartphone manufacturing sector has experienced accelerated growth through the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which has successfully encouraged major manufacturers including Apple to scale up domestic production capacity.
According to government assessments, the PLI scheme allocated ₹19,000 crore in incentives to mobile phone manufacturers, catalysing a substantial expansion across the sector. The initiative has yielded measurable economic outcomes, generating approximately 1.2 million new jobs and contributing ₹3.25 lakh crore to overall revenue generation in the mobile manufacturing industry.
The scheme's effectiveness in boosting production volumes, export capabilities, and employment has positioned India as an increasingly important manufacturing hub for global smartphone brands. By offering financial incentives tied to production targets, the PLI framework has reduced reliance on imports and strengthened domestic value chains in electronics manufacturing.
The results underscore the government's strategy to transition India from a predominantly consumption-driven market to a significant production centre for consumer electronics, supporting both local employment and economic growth objectives.
