Apple Pay now available to Indian iPhone users, expanding digital payments

Apple Pay is now operational in India, allowing compatible iPhone users to add their debit and credit cards to the Wallet app for seamless digital payments. The service enables contactless transactions at point-of-sale terminals, in-app purchases, and online shopping, positioning Apple alongside existing mobile payment platforms in the country's rapidly growing digital payments ecosystem.

Users can activate Apple Pay by opening the Wallet app on their iPhone, tapping the plus icon, and following the prompts to add their card details. The service supports payments through a tap-and-go mechanism at participating retailers and online merchants, with transactions secured through biometric authentication via Face ID or Touch ID.

The launch comes as India accelerates its digital payment adoption, driven by smartphone penetration and government initiatives promoting cashless transactions. Apple's entry into the market provides consumers with another option alongside existing platforms, though success will depend on merchant adoption and consumer familiarity with the service.

Apple Pay is compatible with iPhone 6s and later models, as well as Apple Watch Series 1 and newer devices. The service requires users to have a supported Indian bank account and a registered mobile number linked to their Apple ID. Participating financial institutions are working with Apple to enable the service across their customer bases.
