The Indian government is actively encouraging Apple to diversify its manufacturing operations in the country beyond smartphones, according to a union minister, signalling New Delhi's ambitions to position India as a global electronics manufacturing hub.
Under the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, authorities are targeting cumulative mobile phone production worth approximately Rs 39 lakh crore across the five-year scheme period. The initiative aims to attract major electronics manufacturers to set up or expand production facilities within Indian borders.
Apple's potential expansion would mark a significant step in the company's efforts to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing. The technology giant has already ramped up iPhone production in India in recent years, establishing facilities through contract manufacturers including Foxconn and Wistron.
The push to broaden Apple's manufacturing base aligns with India's broader strategy to enhance domestic electronics production and reduce import reliance. By diversifying into other product categories, Apple could leverage India's growing skilled workforce and favourable policy environment.
The development underscores New Delhi's continued efforts to attract multinational technology companies to invest in manufacturing capabilities, positioning India as an alternative to traditional manufacturing hubs in East Asia.
