Apple confirmed the removal of Bitchat, an offline messaging application backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, from India's App Store after receiving a demand from MeitY under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The ministry's authority under this provision allows it to direct internet companies to block content or services deemed necessary in the interests of national security or public order.

Bitchat was designed to enable peer-to-peer messaging without requiring a centralized server, allowing users to communicate even without active internet connectivity. The application had positioned itself as an alternative to conventional messaging platforms, emphasizing privacy and independence from traditional network infrastructure.

The removal reflects India's increasingly stringent approach toward digital applications and online services. MeitY has previously invoked Section 69A to restrict access to various apps and services, citing national security or public safety concerns. The legal provision has become a key tool for government oversight of the digital ecosystem.

Apple typically complies with governmental takedown requests in jurisdictions where it operates, noting that it responds to legal demands from authorities. The company has previously removed applications from the Indian App Store following similar regulatory directives from Indian government agencies.
