SUNGAI PETANI — Four masked assailants struck a goldsmith shop in the Bakar Ara area of Sungai Petani on Sept 17, making off with valuables estimated at up to RM1 million, according to preliminary reports.
The raiders, armed with hammers and sharp weapons, forced their way into the premises and targeted jewellery and gold items on display. The brazen daylight robbery lasted several minutes before the gang fled the scene, leaving shop staff shaken but physically unharmed.
This marks the second robbery targeting the same goldsmith within a relatively short timeframe, raising concerns about security measures at jewellery retailers in the area. The earlier incident had similarly resulted in substantial losses.
Kedah police have launched an investigation into the robbery and are reviewing security footage from the shop and surrounding businesses in hopes of identifying the suspects. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that may assist in apprehending those responsible.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges facing precious metals retailers across the state, prompting calls for enhanced protection and coordinated law enforcement efforts to combat organised jewellery theft gangs.
