Armed groups exploit social media platforms to recruit children in Colombia

An international human rights organisation has documented a troubling trend of Colombian armed groups leveraging popular social media platforms to enlist children into their ranks. The groups disseminate content across Facebook and TikTok designed to appeal to young audiences, portraying life within their organisations in an attractive light while obscuring the dangers and realities of armed group involvement.

According to findings by the rights group, the recruitment strategy combines two tactics: glorifying the lifestyles and status associated with armed group membership, while simultaneously promoting what appear to be legitimate job opportunities with false promises of employment and income. This dual approach exploits economic vulnerabilities and the aspirations of young people in regions affected by poverty and limited legitimate economic prospects.

The use of widely-accessible digital platforms represents a significant shift in recruitment methods, allowing armed groups to reach potential recruits across geographical boundaries with minimal oversight. Social media algorithms and the viral nature of online content amplify the reach of such recruitment messaging, creating an environment where minors are repeatedly exposed to propaganda normalising armed group participation.

The findings highlight growing concerns about the intersection of digital platforms, youth vulnerability, and organised violence in the region. Child recruitment by armed groups remains a serious violation of international humanitarian law, with long-term psychological and social consequences for affected individuals.
