A soldier stationed at the Army Education Centre in Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, was fatally gored by a bison on Wednesday while participating in a football match. Akash Chauhan, 26, from Uttarakhand, suffered severe injuries in the attack and was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.
The attack occurred when the animal, believed to have strayed from the forested surroundings of the popular hill station, suddenly charged at soldiers engaged in recreational activities. Emergency response teams arrived at the scene but were unable to save the jawan.
Pachmarhi, nestled in the Satpura range at an elevation of over 1,000 meters, is home to a variety of wildlife including bison, sambar deer, and leopards. While such incidents remain rare, the proximity of military installations to wildlife habitats occasionally results in dangerous encounters.
The Army Education Centre is one of several defense installations located in the strategically important hill station. Authorities have been urged to review safety protocols for personnel working in areas with significant animal populations and to implement additional precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
