Police in Assam have arrested two men on charges of transmitting classified defence information to Pakistani intelligence operatives. The suspects include a retired Army officer working on contract and a resident of Bihar, according to law enforcement officials investigating the case.
The accused men are believed to have shared details regarding Army movements and operational matters with their Pakistani handler. Investigators alleged that both men were compromised through elaborate online honeytrap operations involving false romantic or intimate contacts, which were subsequently leveraged to extract sensitive information.
The modus operandi involved posing as women through social media platforms to establish contact with potential targets. Once rapport was established and intimate communications recorded, the operators reportedly used the material to blackmail the victims into cooperation with Pakistani intelligence services.
The case highlights growing concerns about national security vulnerabilities exploited through digital deception tactics. Authorities have intensified warnings to defence personnel about engaging with unknown contacts online and the risks posed by social media manipulation schemes.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, with authorities examining the scope and nature of information that may have been compromised. This incident represents one of several recent cases involving security lapses through digital manipulation tactics targeting Indian defence and government personnel.
