Artist's Georgian Vision: Pasaquan Restoration Preserves Decades of Creative Work

Eddie Owens Martin, an innovative artist working outside mainstream artistic circles, began an ambitious project in 1957 when he inherited a farmhouse and seven acres in rural Georgia. Over the following decades, Martin dedicated himself to transforming the property into Pasaquan, an immersive art environment that reflected his unconventional vision and cultural interests. The artist created a complex landscape of painted structures, ornamental totems and detailed masonry work that integrated diverse artistic and cultural elements into a cohesive whole. Martin's work remained largely known to local communities and a small circle of art enthusiasts until broader recognition came years later. After the property suffered from years of exposure to the elements and deterioration, the Kohler Foundation undertook a major restoration initiative to preserve the site. The conservation project has successfully revived the distinctive structures and artistic elements, ensuring that Pasaquan remains accessible as a testament to Martin's creative persistence and unconventional artistic vision.
