Artist transforms racing tyres into monumental public sculpture

Chakaia Booker has unveiled 'Transit', an ambitious sculptural work composed of recycled Goodyear Eagle F1 racing tyres, at Lock 3 park in Akron, Ohio. The installation stands 17 feet tall and features two elegantly curved forms anchored by stainless steel supports, creating a striking visual statement in the public space.

The project, which began in 2023, draws inspiration from Akron's storied history as a major centre of tyre and rubber manufacturing. By repurposing discarded racing tyres into a monumental artwork, Booker's 'Transit' demonstrates the potential of waste materials to be transformed into meaningful cultural artefacts while simultaneously paying homage to the region's industrial legacy.

The sculpture reflects a broader movement within contemporary art practice toward environmental sustainability and resourcefulness. Through the use of reclaimed materials, the installation addresses themes of renewal and transformation, inviting viewers to reconsider the lifecycle of industrial products.

The unveiling of 'Transit' underscores the significant contributions of female artists to public art initiatives and urban cultural landscapes. The project represents an important addition to the growing body of work by women artists who are reshaping perceptions of public space through innovative, environmentally conscious sculptural practice.
