ASEAN bulk drug procurement could slash costs, strengthen supply

KUALA LUMPUR: Consolidated pharmaceutical procurement across ASEAN could substantially reduce medicine costs while bolstering regional supply security, according to industry analysts examining successful joint purchasing initiatives.

Amrahi Buang, a health economics specialist, highlighted Malaysia's experience with collaborative drug acquisition, noting that cost reductions achieved domestically signal promising prospects for expanded regional cooperation. "The savings we have realised through coordinated procurement demonstrate the potential for ASEAN-wide initiatives to deliver significantly greater cost efficiencies," Buang said.

Pooled purchasing arrangements allow member states to leverage collective bargaining power when negotiating with pharmaceutical manufacturers and suppliers. By consolidating demand across multiple countries, ASEAN nations could secure more competitive pricing while reducing individual procurement overheads.

Beyond immediate cost savings, regional coordination of medicine supply chains would enhance resilience against disruptions and shortages affecting individual member states. A unified approach could facilitate better inventory management, standardised quality controls, and more reliable access to essential medications across the bloc.

Healthcare officials in ASEAN have increasingly recognised the strategic value of collaborative procurement mechanisms. Expanding such arrangements through formal regional frameworks could unlock substantial economic benefits while strengthening the bloc's capacity to respond to public health challenges.
