ASEAN digital framework must balance business growth with data protection

Senior officials and industry experts highlighted the importance of interoperable digital systems during a panel discussion on digital economy policy frameworks at the Autumn Economic Forum 2026 in Ho Chi Minh City on October 27.

Speakers emphasized that ASEAN nations should prioritize compatibility between national regulatory systems to facilitate seamless business transactions across borders, rather than imposing standardized rules that could stifle regional diversity and innovation.

The discussion underscored a critical challenge facing Southeast Asia's digital transformation: enabling companies to operate efficiently across multiple markets while maintaining robust data protection standards. Policymakers acknowledged that striking this balance is essential for attracting high-technology investment to the region.

The forum, co-branded with the World Economic Forum, has positioned itself as a key platform for identifying and mobilizing resources to drive Vietnam's economic growth and regional development in the post-pandemic era.

As ASEAN nations continue competing for digital-era investment and talent, experts suggested that coordinated but flexible policy frameworks could give the bloc a competitive advantage over more rigid regulatory approaches adopted by other regions.
