ASEAN envoy concludes Myanmar visit without meeting detained Suu Kyi
The Philippines, current chair of the regional bloc, has made multiple requests to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi, the ousted civilian leader now held in military custody. The envoy's departure marks another setback in ASEAN's efforts to engage with Myanmar's detained opposition figures.

An envoy from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations concluded a visit to Myanmar without securing a public meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, the deposed civilian leader currently detained by the military junta. The Philippines, which holds the rotating ASEAN chair, had previously sought access to Suu Kyi as part of its diplomatic engagement with the country.
The failed meeting attempt underscores ongoing tensions between Myanmar's military administration and regional diplomatic efforts. ASEAN has repeatedly emphasized the importance of dialogue with all stakeholders in Myanmar, including the detained leadership of the ousted National League for Democracy government.
Suu Kyi has remained in military custody since the February 2021 coup that toppled Myanmar's democratically elected government. Her detention has become a focal point for international and regional concerns regarding the country's political direction and respect for civil liberties.
The ASEAN envoy's visit continues the bloc's attempts to maintain dialogue with Myanmar amid the ongoing political crisis. However, the absence of a public meeting with Suu Kyi suggests limited progress in regional efforts to facilitate engagement between Myanmar's military leadership and the opposition.
