Asean must overhaul transboundary haze coordination, says PM

The Prime Minister has urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to reassess its approach to managing transboundary haze pollution, citing the urgent need for more effective regional cooperation on air quality issues. The call comes as Serian, a town in Sarawak, has recorded hazardous air quality readings, reigniting concerns over the health impacts of seasonal haze across the region.

Transboundary haze remains a persistent challenge for Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries, particularly during the dry season when agricultural burning in neighbouring territories elevates pollution levels across the region. The recurring nature of the phenomenon has prompted calls for stronger enforcement mechanisms and cross-border coordination among Asean member states.

The escalation of air quality concerns in Serian underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Malaysian communities to regional pollution, despite existing bilateral and multilateral agreements. Health authorities have advised residents in affected areas to monitor air quality indices and take appropriate precautions, particularly for vulnerable populations including children and the elderly.

Asean's existing framework for addressing transboundary haze, including the Regional Haze Action Plan, has faced criticism over its implementation and enforcement capacity. The Prime Minister's remarks suggest a willingness to revisit these mechanisms to ensure more responsive and coordinated regional action in addressing the environmental and public health challenge.
