ASEAN nations chart course for media cooperation in digital age

ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat convened in the Lao capital of Vientiane on September 28-29 to reinforce regional collaboration on information and media matters amid rapid technological change. The workshop brought together officials and media representatives tasked with developing strategies to strengthen the bloc's collective approach to communications in an increasingly digital environment.

Vietnam emerged as a vocal participant in discussions, raising concerns about the future sustainability of traditional media outlets as digital platforms continue to reshape the information landscape. Delegates acknowledged the need for regional frameworks that support legacy media institutions while adapting to emerging technologies.

Participants also emphasized the importance of responsible artificial intelligence adoption within the media sector. ASEAN representatives stressed that while news organizations should embrace technological innovation, they must maintain editorial integrity and public trust in an era when misinformation presents growing challenges across the region.

The workshop outcomes are expected to inform broader ASEAN initiatives on financial and banking cooperation, with media transparency playing a key role in regional economic development discussions. Officials indicated that follow-up meetings would be scheduled to implement recommendations and establish concrete cooperation mechanisms among member states.
