Asean nations show uneven progress on unified medical device framework

Asean member states remain at varying levels of readiness for implementing a unified medical device submission process, according to Malaysia's Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad. Speaking on the matter, the minister noted that while some countries have advanced further in their preparations, others are still in the process of establishing the necessary regulatory and legal frameworks required for the harmonised system. The disparity in readiness reflects the different stages of regulatory development across the 10-nation bloc, which has been working toward greater alignment in healthcare standards. Dzulkefly's remarks highlight the challenges in coordinating regional healthcare policies among nations with differing institutional capacities and existing regulatory structures. The unified medical device submission framework is intended to streamline approval processes across Asean, potentially reducing barriers to market entry for manufacturers and improving access to medical devices for consumers throughout the region.
