Asgiriya Mahanayake urges authorities to free imprisoned Buddhist monk

The Most Venerable Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Mahanayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter has publicly appealed for the freedom of imprisoned Buddhist monk Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera. The religious leader made his position clear during a visit by senior prison administration representatives to the historic temple.

Among those who called on the Mahanayake Thera was Senaka Palletenna, Commissioner of Prisons (Operations and Media), along with other high-ranking officials from the Department of Prisons. The courtesy visit to Asgiriya Maha Viharaya provided the occasion for the Mahanayake Thera to raise the matter of Gnanasara Thera's continued detention.

The intervention by one of Sri Lanka's most prominent Buddhist ecclesiastical leaders underscores ongoing concerns within religious circles regarding the imprisoned monk's status. The appeal reflects broader discussions within the Buddhist community about the case and calls for a reconsideration of the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.

No immediate response from prison authorities regarding the Mahanayake Thera's call for release has been reported.
