ASHA workers demand ₹15,000 monthly pay across India

Health workers affiliated to the All India United Trade Union Centre staged a protest outside the Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer's office in Karwar on Tuesday, demanding improved compensation and payment regularization. The demonstration formed part of a coordinated state-wide protest week aimed at pressing the government to address longstanding grievances affecting ASHA workers across India.

The activists are seeking a minimum monthly remuneration of ₹15,000, along with guaranteed timely disbursement of incentives and honorarium payments. Many ASHA workers operate on stipends significantly below this threshold, facing irregular payment schedules that strain their household finances.

ASHA workers form a critical component of India's health service delivery network, particularly in rural and underserved areas. These accredited social health activists serve as the primary link between communities and the formal healthcare system, conducting health awareness campaigns, assisting with immunization drives, and facilitating maternal and child health services.

The protests underscore growing discontent among grassroots health workers over inadequate compensation relative to their responsibilities and the essential nature of their work. The action signals continued pressure on authorities to improve employment conditions and ensure regular, predictable payment cycles for the workforce.
