Asia risks becoming AI battleground as tech blocs harden

Competing technological blocs led by China and the West threaten to fragment global artificial intelligence development, with control over critical minerals and semiconductor technology dividing the region. India faces critical choices in navigating the emerging AI geopolitical divide.

The global race for artificial intelligence supremacy is increasingly bifurcating into two distinct technological ecosystems, raising concerns that Asia could become a flashpoint in a new form of strategic competition. China has secured dominant control over critical minerals essential for AI infrastructure, while Western nations—particularly the United States—maintain technological leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced AI systems. This divergence threatens to create incompatible technology standards and limit access for nations attempting to remain neutral or independent.

The mineral supply chain has emerged as a key strategic battleground. China controls approximately 70 percent of rare earth element processing and dominates the extraction of lithium, cobalt, and other materials crucial for battery and semiconductor production. Meanwhile, American and allied nations have responded by strengthening their position in chip design and fabrication, with initiatives to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains. This competition for control points in the AI value chain echoes Cold War-era bloc formation, albeit centered on technology rather than ideology.

India occupies a unique and vulnerable position in this emerging divide. As a significant AI talent hub and potential manufacturing destination, the country could benefit from investment and technology transfer from either bloc. However, India also risks becoming a dependent node in either system without developing indigenous capabilities. The nation's historical commitment to strategic autonomy, established through decades of non-aligned foreign policy, faces new tests as pressure mounts to choose technological partners.

Analysts warn that fragmentation of AI development could slow innovation globally and create interoperability problems affecting developing nations disproportionately. India's technology sector, which has built considerable expertise in AI services and applications, could find itself disadvantaged if competing standards and restricted data flows become the norm. Policymakers in New Delhi are increasingly focused on developing domestic semiconductor and AI capabilities while maintaining partnerships across multiple technology ecosystems, a delicate balance that will define the region's technological future.
