Asia's AI crash: Kospi -7.57%, Nikkei -4.9%

South Korea's Kospi fell 7.57% on Thursday, its seventh straight loss and its worst day since July. The market tripped a circuit breaker. Samsung Electronics sank 9.48% and SK hynix fell 11.06%. In Tokyo the Nikkei lost 4.9%, and in Taipei the Taiex dropped 3.41%. Asia's AI hardware champions have just been repriced.

A circuit-breaker day in Seoul

The Kospi finished at 5,554.22, down 454.59 points, or 7.57%, Korea Exchange, CNBC and Seoul Economic Daily report. The Kosdaq lost 7.65%. Both boards tripped Level 1 circuit breakers, the first since late July. Intraday, the Kospi sank as much as 9.29%, Reuters reports. Combined value on the two boards shrank by about 411 trillion won.

This was not a one-day twitch. Since 6 October the Kospi has fallen about 20.7% from 7,003.74. Seoul Economic Daily, citing Goldman Sachs, calls it the longest losing streak since September 2024. Foreign investors sold a net 3.6 trillion won on Thursday, taking their eight-session selling to about 18 trillion won, Seoul Economic Daily reports. The won weakened, with the dollar closing at 1,344.6.

Across the region, Japan's Nikkei closed at 64,425.95, down 4.9%, CNBC and Nikkei Asia report. SoftBank fell about 7.9%, and Advantest and Tokyo Electron also sold off hard. Taiwan's Taiex dropped 3.41% to 46,969.87, Herald Business reports. Shanghai fell about 1.6% and Shenzhen about 2.4%. Australia's ASX finished flat.

Two shocks landed together

The first was US consumer prices. September CPI rose 0.6% on the month and 3.7% year on year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Wednesday, hotter than the Dow Jones consensus. Gasoline alone jumped 9.1% in the month. That revived bets that the Federal Reserve may tighten again, and chip stocks that had ridden easy money and AI hopes were hit first. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had already dropped about 4.3% overnight, Reuters notes.

The second was an AI profitability scare. Sources told CNBC that Anthropic's third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up from $11.6 billion in the second quarter, but that growth slowed enough to unsettle traders pricing in endless chip demand. Debt worries at CoreWeave and an eight-day slide in US semiconductor ETFs, CNBC reports, fed the same fear: a build-out financed faster than its returns arrive.

Why Korea was hit hardest

The reason is structural. Samsung and SK hynix together made up about 46.92% of Kospi market capitalisation at Thursday's close, Herald Business reports. When those two stocks fall 10%, the whole index falls with them. Mixo Das at J.P. Morgan told Reuters the market is struggling to find a new buyer after buybacks have run their course.

On the same Thursday, the IMF published its Asia-Pacific Regional Economic Outlook. It projects regional growth of 4.8% in 2026, still supported by AI exports, but warns that an AI investment or valuation correction would hit Asia hard, given the region's role in global tech supply chains.

The verdict

Asia built the hardware boom, and Thursday showed the flip side. When investors doubt AI cash flows and US rates at the same time, Seoul, Tokyo and Taipei reprice together, and Korea's two-stock concentration turns a sector scare into a market crash. The IMF still sees the region growing near 5% on the AI cycle. The market has just asked how durable that cycle is when debt and inflation collide.

What to watch next: Friday's follow-through in Seoul and Tokyo, whether Samsung and SK hynix stabilise, the next US inflation prints, and whether chip exporters in Malaysia and Singapore catch the chill. Is Asia's AI premium still earned, or was Thursday the start of a longer unwind?
