Asia's two-speed boom: chips up, shoppers down
Korea grew faster than expected on chips while consumer spending fell; China's electronics profits doubled as carmakers' slid; Thailand's imports hit a record. Asia's AI boom is lifting factories, not yet households.

South Korea's economy grew 1% in the third quarter from the previous three months, well ahead of forecasts, according to the Bank of Korea's advance estimate. But in the same report, private consumption fell. Across Asia, the artificial intelligence hardware boom is lifting the headline numbers while households are being left behind.

Korea: chips up, shoppers down

Gross domestic product grew 1% on the quarter, beating the 0.7% median in a Reuters poll, and 3.4% on the year, Yonhap reports. Facility investment rose 4.1%, and the central bank said semiconductors drove about half of the growth. The KOSPI jumped 3.09% on Tuesday, and foreign investors were net buyers of 593 billion won of shares, Reuters reports.

Private consumption, however, fell 0.2%. Spending dropped on cars, home appliances, financial services and dining, the Korea Times reports. The Bank of Korea blamed lower spending on financial services as stock trading slowed, and delayed car deliveries after strikes at major automakers. Lee Dong-won of the central bank also pointed to "structural factors such as high household debt and population aging." Consumer sentiment slipped in October, to 105.4.

China and Thailand show the same split

China's industrial profits rose 14.4% in September from a year earlier, up from 4.2% in August, the National Bureau of Statistics says. In the first nine months, profits in computer, communication and electronic equipment manufacturing rose 103.8%, while car makers' profits fell 22.8%. Reuters reports furniture makers' profits fell by more than half. The statistics bureau credits demand for AI computing power and advanced storage. Investors were not convinced: on Tuesday the Shanghai Composite fell 1.33% to a 14-month low and the CSI semiconductor index dropped 5.8%, RTHK reports. A day earlier, the People's Bank of China set up a new emergency swap facility for asset managers facing large-scale redemptions in the bond market.

Thailand's exports rose 24% in September, led by electronics, beating forecasts, the commerce ministry says. But imports jumped a record 50.4%, leaving a trade deficit of $5.86 billion against a forecast of $1.83 billion, Reuters reports. Thai officials cite the International Monetary Fund in naming Thailand one of the world's major net exporters of AI-related hardware.

Economies paying for expensive oil without a big chip cushion are under strain. India's rupee closed at 95.12 to the dollar on Tuesday, with traders citing likely intervention by the Reserve Bank and elevated crude prices, PTI reports. Indonesia's rupiah hovered near its record low, at about 18,129 per dollar, as Bank Indonesia vowed to adjust its tools to support the currency, Investing.com reports.

The condition behind the bull case

"Barring a major reversal in the global AI investment boom, industrial profits are expected to continue growing at a rapid pace," Ding Meng of CITIC Bank International told Reuters. The whole case rests on one industry and one spending cycle.

SK hynix has since reported: on Wednesday it posted record third-quarter revenue of 104.6 trillion won and operating profit of 83.3 trillion won, up 632% from a year earlier, the company said. Samsung Electronics reports on Thursday, Yonhap reports. Microsoft and Alphabet report on Wednesday and Amazon on Thursday. The Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates on Wednesday, and the Bank of Japan is expected to hold at 1.25% on Friday while signalling it stands ready to keep raising borrowing costs. The Bank of Korea releases new growth forecasts next month.

Our verdict: Asia's AI boom is real, and it is showing up in growth, profits and exports. But right now it is a factory boom, not a household boom. The Bank of Korea expects spending to rebound as chipmakers pay dividends and bonuses. If that happens, the boom broadens. If it does not, Asia is building its growth on a single industry and on budgets set by a handful of American tech giants.
