Asian equity markets retreated Thursday, with significant losses recorded across Japan and South Korea as traders assessed the implications of an imminent Bank of Japan rate decision.
Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 1.47%, while the broader Topix gauge edged marginally lower by 0.05%. The decline reflected investor caution ahead of the central bank's policy announcement, which could signal a shift in Japan's ultra-loose monetary stance that has underpinned asset prices for years.
Southeast Asian sentiment darkened further as South Korea's Kospi index suffered a sharper descent, plunging 3.35% in morning trading. The steeper selloff in Seoul suggested broader regional concern about tightening monetary conditions and their impact on growth-sensitive sectors.
Countering the downbeat mood in Northeast Asia, New Zealand's NZX 50 eked out modest gains, rising 0.33%, indicating pockets of resilience in the broader Asia-Pacific region. Market participants remain focused on central bank policy trajectories, with the BOJ decision expected to provide clearer signals on the durability of accommodative conditions in one of Asia's largest economies.
