Asian Games 2026: OCA enforces strict safeguarding code with suspension penalties

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has circulated a comprehensive Safeguarding Code of Conduct to all athletes and officials participating in the 2026 Asian Games, set to commence on September 19 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The code establishes strict prohibitions on inappropriate relationships involving power imbalances or dependency, the use of degrading language, and tolerance of harassment, with breaches potentially resulting in suspension from the mega-event.

Participants are required to sign and formally adhere to the code as a mandatory condition of participation. The regulations extend to social media conduct, with the OCA stipulating that all online content must be "respectful and appropriate" and cannot "compromise the dignity or safety of others." Violations of these standards may result in removal of accreditation and exclusion from competition.

In accordance with OCA requirements, each national contingent must designate a Safeguarding Officer. India has appointed Softball Association of India President Neetal Narang to serve in this capacity during the Games. The role carries mandatory responsibility for ensuring compliance with safeguarding protocols within the Indian delegation.

The initiative reflects growing global emphasis on athlete welfare and protection within international sporting competitions. The code applies uniformly across all participating nations and represents a coordinated effort to maintain safe and respectful environments throughout the Asian Games.
