Asian Games Rely on Cruise Ships, Container Homes for Athlete Accommodation

Between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes and officials are expected to be housed aboard the Costa Serena, an Italian cruise ship typically outfitted with 571 cabins, seven swimming pools, eight restaurants and nine bars. The vessel's deployment represents a creative approach to solving the substantial accommodation demands created by the multi-sport event.

Beyond maritime solutions, organizers have also incorporated converted shipping containers into the accommodation plan, underscoring the innovative—if sometimes makeshift—nature of their lodging infrastructure. The dual approach reflects the challenge of providing adequate housing for the tens of thousands of participants converging on the host venue.

The reliance on cruise ships and container facilities points to broader logistical hurdles faced by Asian Games organizers. Previous editions of the continental competition have similarly grappled with infrastructure demands, though the extent of unconventional accommodation in this instance appears particularly pronounced.

Host city officials have indicated that the alternative accommodation options, while unconventional, meet international standards for athlete comfort and safety.
