Asian Para Games hit by national anthem mix-up in Japan

Officials at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan, have issued an apology after a series of errors saw the wrong national anthems played during medal award ceremonies. Athletes from Taiwan and Mongolia were subjected to the Iranian national anthem being broadcast in their honour on multiple occasions, according to event organisers.

The blunders occurred during three separate medal presentations at the games, which are being held in the central Japanese city. Nagoya's mayor publicly apologised for the protocol breaches, acknowledging the embarrassment caused to the affected delegations and athletes.

The incident reflects organisational challenges sometimes encountered at large international sporting events. Organisers have pledged to implement additional verification procedures to prevent similar errors during the remainder of the competition. The Asian Para Games, which feature athletes with physical, visual and intellectual impairments, are scheduled to conclude this week.

Neither Taiwan nor Mongolia has issued formal statements regarding the anthem mix-ups, though the errors represent a notable breach of sporting protocol. National anthems hold significant ceremonial importance at international competitions, with their correct performance considered essential protocol for honouring medal-winning athletes and their nations.
