ASML bolsters Japan operations to support domestic chip ambitions

ASML Holdings, the world's leading supplier of chip-making equipment, plans to increase staffing levels across its Japanese operations as the country seeks to strengthen its semiconductor manufacturing base. The expansion comes amid intensified efforts by Japan to reduce reliance on imports and build domestic capabilities in advanced chip production.

The move will enable ASML to provide enhanced technical support and services to Japanese chipmakers developing next-generation processors. State-backed firm Rapidus, launched in 2022 with government backing, is pursuing aggressive expansion plans to compete in cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world's largest contract chipmaker, is also ramping up operations in Japan to diversify production beyond Taiwan.

Japan has designated semiconductors as a strategic priority, allocating substantial government funding to support domestic manufacturers and attract global industry players. The country's chip production capacity had shrunk significantly over recent decades as competitors in Taiwan and South Korea gained market share. Recent geopolitical tensions and supply-chain vulnerabilities have underscored the importance of regional semiconductor production hubs.

An expanded ASML presence will strengthen the infrastructure supporting Japan's semiconductor ambitions, providing critical manufacturing expertise and equipment support. The company's investment signals confidence in the long-term viability of Japan's chipmaking renaissance and the commitment of major manufacturers to establish robust local operations.
