The Assam government has issued fresh directives instructing law enforcement and traffic officials not to obstruct ambulances and emergency vehicles for VIP convoys, amid renewed focus on the balance between security protocols and public health priorities.
The order comes after a controversy involving traffic management during high-level movement, which had sparked concerns about potential delays to emergency medical services. The incident drew public attention to the procedures governing VIP security arrangements in the state.
Authorities at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where the case in question occurred, along with the patient's family members, clarified that the death of a patient was not attributable to traffic delays. Medical records indicated the individual was suffering from cirrhosis, a chronic liver condition, with the fatality resulting from the underlying illness rather than external factors.
The government's directive seeks to establish clearer protocols ensuring that emergency medical transport maintains priority access on roads, even during official VIP movements. State officials emphasized that security arrangements should be implemented without compromising access to critical healthcare services.
The order reflects growing administrative attention to reconciling security requirements with public welfare needs across Indian states, particularly regarding emergency medical response times in urban and semi-urban areas.
