The Assam cabinet has cleared a significant employment initiative aimed at supporting veterans of India's Agnipath scheme. Under the new policy, 12% of vacancies in state government jobs will be reserved exclusively for former Agniveers, marking a major push to facilitate their transition to civilian employment.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the recruitment process under this reservation framework will begin operations from 2027 onwards. The move aligns with broader national efforts to provide career pathways for Agnipath scheme participants, who complete short-term military service contracts.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced by the Indian government in 2022, recruits personnel on a four-year engagement basis with limited permanent positions. The Assam government's decision to reserve quota seats reflects commitment to supporting these former servicemen in securing stable employment within the state administration.
State officials indicated that detailed implementation guidelines and eligibility criteria for the scheme will be finalized ahead of the 2027 recruitment commencement. This policy is expected to benefit a substantial number of Agnipath veterans residing in Assam and seeking government employment opportunities.
