Assam to sack government employees who enter into polygamous marriages

The Assam government has approved a tough policy to crack down on polygamy among its workforce, mandating immediate termination for any civil servant who enters into multiple marriages. Under the amended provisions of the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, employees found to have contracted more than one marriage will face summary dismissal from their posts.

Beyond termination, the policy carries additional consequences for offenders. Those dismissed under the new provision will be declared permanently ineligible for future government employment, effectively ending their prospects for public sector work in the state.

The announcement of the amended rules was made by the state Chief Minister, signalling the administration's intent to enforce stricter moral and ethical standards among government servants. The move reflects a growing focus among several Indian states on regulating the personal conduct of public employees through formal disciplinary mechanisms.

The amended rules apply retrospectively and prospectively to all government employees across departments and services. Officials have indicated that implementation will be handled through existing disciplinary procedures established under the service rules.
