Assam to seek CBI inquiry into flood causes; polygamy policy announced
The Assam government has announced a strict zero-tolerance policy on polygamy among state employees, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pledging to terminate any employee found engaged in the practice regardless of religious affiliation. The state has also decided to approach the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the underlying causes of recurring floods.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam government would take decisive action against employees found practising polygamy, signalling a departure from any religiously-informed approach to the policy. The termination policy would apply uniformly across all state employees irrespective of their faith, the Chief Minister clarified.
The announcement comes as part of the government's broader agenda on administrative discipline and social policy. Sarma did not specify a timeline for implementation but emphasised the government's commitment to enforcing the measure.
In a separate development, the Assam government has decided to approach the CBI to investigate the root causes of the state's recurring flood crises. The decision reflects growing concern over the destructive impact of annual flooding on the state's infrastructure, agriculture and livelihoods.
Assam, situated in the Brahmaputra Valley, has long been vulnerable to severe flooding during the monsoon season. The state government's move to involve central investigative agencies suggests it is seeking to address systemic issues that may be exacerbating the problem.
