Astami observance date clarified: October 19 designated for Kanya Pujan

The Astami tithi, an important date in the Hindu lunar calendar, will commence on October 18 at 8:27 AM and conclude on October 19 at 10:51 AM, according to astrological calculations. This extended duration across two calendar days had prompted uncertainty about the correct date for religious observances.

Astronomers and Hindu scholars have clarified that while the tithi technically begins on October 18, the requisite conditions for performing Kanya Pujan—the ritual worship of nine young girls during Navratri—are not present on that day. The concept of "udaya tithi," or the rising tithi that marks the most auspicious moment for ceremonial activities, falls on October 19.

"Since the udaya tithi for Astami is not available on October 18, performing Kanya Pujan on Monday, October 19 is the appropriate course of action," explained astrological experts consulted on the matter. This guidance aligns with traditional Hindu practice, which prioritizes the alignment of celestial conditions with ritual timing to ensure the spiritual efficacy of observances.

Indian families preparing for Navratri celebrations are advised to schedule their Kanya Pujan ceremonies for October 19 to adhere to proper astrological and religious protocols.
