Atletico Madrid secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Manchester United in Champions League play, adding to the English club's mounting difficulties under interim management.
The Madrid side dominated proceedings to register a convincing home win, with Manchester United unable to find the breakthrough needed to arrest their recent form. The result leaves United searching for their first victory under Michael Carrick's stewardship.
Atletico's victory underscores the gulf in current form between the two European powers. United's defensive frailties and lack of attacking incisiveness were exposed throughout the encounter, as Diego Simeone's well-organized side controlled large portions of the match.
The defeat marks another challenging chapter for United's European campaign this season. With Carrick tasked with stabilizing the club, the Manchester side faces a mounting fixture list with little momentum to draw upon as they look to turn around their fortunes both domestically and on the continent.
