Audi India eyes local EV production, targets market share doubling

The German carmaker plans to achieve this growth through a three-pronged approach focusing on customer centricity, new product launches, and network expansion, according to Balbir Singh Dhillon, Brand Director at Audi India. The company currently holds approximately 8 per cent of the luxury vehicle market.

Dhillon indicated that a decision on local BEV production is imminent, with an announcement expected within the next two months. The initiative reflects Audi's confidence in India's growing electric vehicle segment and the potential for premium EV demand among Indian consumers.

The company also plans to capitalise on the proposed India-EU free trade agreement to introduce additional models for market testing purposes. Simultaneously, Audi is prioritising dealership network expansion beyond metropolitan areas, with particular focus on tier-II and tier-III cities where premium vehicle demand is emerging.

The strategy underscores Audi's commitment to strengthening its position in India's luxury automobile market, where competition among international brands continues to intensify. Local EV manufacturing could reduce costs and improve supply chain efficiency while supporting India's transition towards sustainable mobility.
