Aurora borealis expected to light up North American skies this week

The northern lights are set to make an appearance across select regions of North America following a solar event that occurred earlier this week. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecast geomagnetic storm conditions ranging from G1 to G2 levels as a coronal mass ejection (CME)—triggered by an M1.4 solar flare—travels toward Earth.

The aurora display is expected to be most visible overnight between October 8 and 9, with the possibility of enhanced activity continuing into early Friday morning. Observers in northern latitudes, particularly across Alaska, Canada, and northern United States territories, will have the best opportunities to witness the phenomenon, provided skies remain clear and dark.

Geomagnetic storms occur when solar radiation interacts with Earth's magnetosphere, creating the distinctive curtains of colored light that characterize aurora displays. The G1 to G2 classification indicates moderate storm activity that could extend viewing opportunities beyond typically high-latitude regions, though visibility in populated areas remains dependent on local weather conditions and light pollution.

Sky watchers planning to observe the event are advised to seek locations away from city lights and to check local weather forecasts before heading out. The timing and intensity of the display may shift based on the precise arrival of the CME and fluctuations in solar wind conditions over the coming hours.
