Australia's agricultural visa scheme targeted by sophisticated fraud networks

Australian immigration and law enforcement officials have raised alarm over an expanding fraud operation centred on the country's agricultural visa pathways. Scammers are leveraging the programme's popularity among migrant workers from South and Southeast Asia to perpetrate elaborate deception schemes.
The fraud typically begins with online recruitment advertisements promising lucrative farm work positions across rural Australia. Perpetrators pose as legitimate employment agents or farm operators, collecting substantial upfront fees from applicants under the guise of visa sponsorship, accommodation arrangements, and job placement services. Once payments are made, victims either receive no further contact or are directed to submit personal documentation that is subsequently used for identity theft.
Authorities have documented cases in which fraudsters have forged employer letters, falsified employment contracts, and created counterfeit visa sponsorship documents. Some victims have travelled to Australia on visas obtained through fraudulent means, only to discover no legitimate employment awaited them.
The Australian Department of Home Affairs has advised prospective migrants to verify employer credentials directly through official channels and exercise extreme caution with unsolicited job offers. Officials recommend reporting suspected scams to local police and immigration authorities. Migrants from Bangladesh and neighbouring countries are urged to seek guidance from legitimate migration agents registered with their home country's authorities before pursuing Australian work visa opportunities.
