Helen Haines, the independent member for Indi in Victoria's northeast, was struck by a car outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday. Police and the Prime Minister's office confirmed the vehicle was deliberately driven at the lawmaker, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the incident, which occurred in the regional city located approximately 230 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. Haines was transported to hospital where she remained in critical condition as medical teams worked to stabilise her.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed concern over the attack, characterising it as a serious assault on a serving member of parliament. Victorian police launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident as authorities sought to establish a motive.
Haines has served as the independent representative for Indi since 2019, holding a seat previously held by fellow crossbencher Cathy McGowan. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of elected representatives in Australia.
