Authorities issue landslide alerts for five Sri Lankan districts

Landslide warnings have been issued for five districts following forecasts of continued heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka's western and southwestern regions. The alerts come as the country enters a period of heightened precipitation, with weather authorities monitoring atmospheric conditions closely.

The Disaster Management Centre and meteorological services identified the five districts as areas of particular concern due to their terrain and soil composition, which render them susceptible to landslides during periods of intense or prolonged rainfall. Residents and local authorities in these zones have been advised to implement precautionary measures and heighten vigilance.

Authorities have urged communities in landslide-prone areas to monitor weather bulletins and follow guidance from disaster management officials. Local councils have been instructed to prepare contingency plans and ensure drainage systems are cleared to minimize water accumulation on hillsides and elevated terrain.

The warning underscores the continuing vulnerability of certain regions to natural hazards during monsoon seasons. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through mountainous areas and to relocate to safer locations if conditions deteriorate or if landslide risks materialize in their immediate vicinity.
