Authorities probe illegal treasure hunting at protected Mt. Matutum

KORONADAL CITY — Local environmental authorities have launched an investigation into suspected illegal treasure hunting operations detected on Mt. Matutum, South Cotabato's iconic peak, following the discovery of unauthorized excavations in Polomolok municipality.
The Polomolok Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) first inspected the excavation site located in Purok Macarandan, Barangay Palkan, according to MENRO Chief Engr. Agustin Valencia Jr., who reported the findings on Wednesday.
Mt. Matutum, which stands as a significant environmental and cultural landmark in the region, is protected under environmental laws that strictly prohibit unauthorized mining and excavation activities. The discovery of the unauthorized digging has prompted coordinated action between environmental officials and police units to determine the scope of the illegal operations and identify those responsible.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the extent of the damage caused by the excavations or whether arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to secure the site and prevent further unauthorized activities within the protected mountain area.
