Authorities seize P1.7M in contraband cigarettes in Zamboanga Sibugay

PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — Authorities have confiscated smuggled cigarettes worth P1.7 million following a joint law enforcement operation conducted in Barangay Poblacion, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay on Sunday. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group – Region 9 (CIDG-9) announced the successful intercept of the contraband goods.

Operatives from the CIDG Zamboanga Sibugay office coordinated with personnel from the Ipil Municipal Police in executing the operation. Two suspects were apprehended at the scene, according to the CIDG-9 statement.

The seizure represents a significant blow against the illicit cigarette trade in the region. Authorities said the recovered contraband would be submitted as evidence while the investigation continues. The names and further details regarding the suspects have not been released pending completion of the initial investigation.

The operation underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat smuggling activities across the Mindanao region. The CIDG-9 has intensified operations targeting illegal trade and contraband operations that deprive government of tax revenues and create unfair market competition.
