KUANTAN — The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASAM) has announced plans to develop an autism village in Pahang, addressing a critical gap in long-term residential care for adults on the autism spectrum. The project, estimated to cost RM25 million, will provide safe accommodation and comprehensive support services for autistic individuals who lack adequate family or financial means.
The initiative comes as Malaysia grapples with increasing demand for adult autism services. Many families face challenges securing appropriate housing and care arrangements for their autistic relatives, particularly as parents age or pass away. The proposed village aims to create a structured, supportive living environment that promotes independence while ensuring residents' safety and wellbeing.
The facility is expected to accommodate multiple residents in a community-based setting, offering various services including daily living support, vocational training, and therapeutic programs. The design will balance residents' autonomy with necessary supervision and care, creating a sustainable model for long-term residential autism support.
Officials indicated the project reflects growing recognition of autism spectrum disorder's lifelong support requirements in Malaysia. The development represents a collaborative approach to addressing post-parental care challenges faced by many families in the region, potentially serving as a template for similar initiatives elsewhere in the country.
