Axis Bank reported a robust second-quarter performance, with net profit jumping 37 percent year-on-year as the bank benefited from a substantial reduction in provisions for loan losses and advances.
The private sector lender's provisioning expenses fell sharply by more than 50 percent to Rs 1,694 crore in the quarter ended September 30, compared with the prior-year period. This decline reflected improved asset quality and reduced credit stress across the bank's portfolio.
Net interest income, a key measure of lending profitability, climbed to Rs 15,371 crore from Rs 13,744.55 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The figure also surpassed Bloomberg consensus estimates of Rs 15,259 crore, demonstrating stronger-than-expected lending growth and improved margins.
The results underscore Axis Bank's improving operational momentum as the broader Indian banking sector continues to navigate moderating credit cycles. The bank's ability to expand its net interest income while simultaneously reducing provisions suggests strengthening loan quality and effective risk management amid the current economic environment.
