Axis Bank reported a 38 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit for the second quarter of FY27, reaching ₹7,003 crore, marking strong earnings growth but falling shy of market estimates. The Mumbai-based lender's net interest income, a key profitability metric, climbed 11.8 per cent to ₹15,371 crore, reflecting healthy underlying business momentum.
Loan advances grew at a robust pace of 23 per cent during the quarter, demonstrating continued credit expansion across the bank's retail and corporate portfolios. This growth trajectory underscores Axis Bank's market positioning amid an otherwise moderating credit cycle in the Indian banking sector. The bank's other income, however, contracted 1.4 per cent to ₹6,531 crore, weighing on overall revenue expansion.
A notable highlight was the substantial decline in provisions, which fell 52.2 per cent compared to the prior-year quarter. The reduction reflected improved asset quality and lower credit-risk assessments, providing relief on the cost side of the bank's operations. This provisional relief contributed materially to bottom-line profitability, offsetting pressures from the other income segment.
Despite the earnings growth, the results fell short of consensus analyst expectations, signalling that market participants had anticipated even stronger performance. The mixed outcome reflects the complex operating environment for Indian banks, balancing growth imperatives with regulatory requirements and evolving credit dynamics.
