Axis Bank shares slide despite stellar 39% profit surge in Q2

Axis Bank shares declined 5 percent on the bourses despite reporting a robust 39 percent year-on-year increase in net profit for the second quarter, signaling investor disappointment over the bank's cost management. According to analysts at MOFSL, the private sector lender's performance fell short of market estimates, primarily due to a spike in operating expenditure that overshadowed operational gains.

The bank's net interest income, which measures lending profitability, expanded substantially during the quarter, while provisions—funds set aside for bad loans—came in lower than anticipated. These positive factors, however, were negated by the elevated operating expenses that pressured overall earnings quality and margin expansion.

Treasury income, which reflects gains or losses from securities trading and investments, also remained softer than expected, further dampening investor sentiment. The combination of higher administrative and operational costs relative to revenue growth has raised concerns among market participants about the bank's ability to maintain operating leverage and improve profitability ratios going forward.

The share price reaction underscores the market's focus on operational efficiency metrics beyond topline earnings growth. Investors are increasingly scrutinizing cost-to-income ratios and expense management as key performance indicators, particularly for large-cap financial stocks in the current economic environment.
