Ayushman Bharat reaches 60 crore beneficiaries as healthcare scheme marks eight years

The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has emerged as the world's largest healthcare scheme, according to government figures released on the occasion of its eighth anniversary. The programme now provides Rs 5 lakh annual health cover to over 60 crore beneficiaries across the country, significantly expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare.

Launched with the objective of ensuring every Indian has access to essential medical services, the scheme has recorded substantial impact in reducing out-of-pocket health expenses for poor and middle-class families. The programme has successfully distributed over 48.54 crore Ayushman cards to eligible beneficiaries, enabling them to access cashless treatment at network hospitals.

Beyond hospital-based care, the initiative has strengthened primary healthcare infrastructure through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which have recorded over 500 crore visits since their establishment. These health centers operate at the grassroots level, providing preventive and primary care services in communities across the nation.

The expansion of the scheme reflects the government's continued focus on healthcare accessibility and financial protection for vulnerable populations. As the programme enters its ninth year of operation, it continues to serve as a key instrument in India's broader public health strategy.
