Back-to-back European storms leave tens of thousands without power

Two powerful storms struck Western Europe in quick succession, wreaking havoc on critical infrastructure across multiple countries. Storms Boelo and Austen, which occurred within a day of each other, left tens of thousands of residents in Britain, France and Germany without electricity.

The successive weather systems disrupted power supplies across the affected regions, with utility companies scrambling to restore services to affected areas. The storms also caused significant disruptions to air travel and knocked out telephone services in some localities, compounding the impact on residents and businesses.

The rapid succession of the two storms posed particular challenges for emergency response teams and utility providers, who were forced to deal with compounding damage and widespread outages. Energy companies worked to deploy repair crews while managing the ongoing effects of the first storm as the second system moved through the region.

The extent of damage and timeline for full restoration of services remained under assessment as authorities continued responding to reports of downed power lines and infrastructure damage across affected areas.
