Baguio City receives top honor for smoke-free initiatives in Asean awards

BAGUIO CITY — The city's sustained efforts to protect public health from tobacco smoke have been formally recognized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, placing it among regional leaders in smoke-free initiatives.

The Gold Award, presented on September 10 during the inaugural ceremony of the Asean Health Ministers Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, reflects Baguio City's implementation and enforcement of smoke-free ordinances across public spaces and institutions.

The award acknowledges the city's multifaceted approach to reducing tobacco smoke exposure among residents, workers, and visitors through the adoption of comprehensive smoke-free policies. Such measures are aimed at reducing health risks associated with secondhand smoke inhalation.

The Asean Smoke-Free Awards recognize member states and cities demonstrating exceptional commitment to tobacco control and public health protection. Baguio City's recognition underscores the Philippines' participation in regional health advancement initiatives and sets a benchmark for other municipalities pursuing similar public health goals.
