Baguio crime surge concerns police as robberies spike nearly 80%

Baguio City's police chief reported a 2.1-percent increase in index crimes during the first ten months of 2026, signaling a troubling trend in public safety for the popular highland destination. Police Col. Nixon Laoyan, director of the Baguio City Police Office, disclosed the findings in a statement released on Wednesday, noting that robbery offenses have proven particularly problematic.

Robbery cases jumped by 78.6 percent compared to the same period in 2025, making it one of the most significant crime spikes recorded by local authorities. The surge has raised concerns among police officials tasked with maintaining order in a city that draws thousands of visitors and students annually.

Beyond robberies, motorcycle carnapping incidents have also increased year-on-year, compounding security challenges in the city. The twin surges in vehicle-related crimes and street robberies have prompted the police office to review its crime prevention strategies and community safety initiatives.

Local authorities have not yet announced specific measures to address the uptick, though the figures suggest intensified police operations may be necessary to reverse the trend and restore public confidence in security across Baguio City.
