BAGUIO CITY — A hundred koi fish were introduced into Burnham Lake this week in a bid to naturally control excessive algae growth plaguing the water body, the Baguio City Public Information Office announced on Friday. The initiative, which began late last month, represents a collaborative environmental management strategy aimed at improving the lake's ecological health and recreational value. Local volunteer and recreational development consultant Rafael Serrano partnered with Baguio City Jail Male Dormitory warden Atty. Dexter Ngipol to coordinate the release of the ornamental carp, which are known for their algae-consuming properties. The koi species is widely used in aquatic management programs throughout Asia as a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method of controlling water quality degradation. Officials believe the introduction of the fish will help restore Burnham Lake's condition and make it more suitable for public use, while reducing the need for chemical interventions. The project underscores Baguio's commitment to leveraging natural solutions for environmental challenges affecting the city's cherished landmarks.
