BAGUIO CITY — Tourism officials are eyeing a silver lining to the anticipated climate challenges ahead, with projections suggesting that extreme heat could drive increased visitor traffic to the Philippines' premier mountain destination.
Jovie Ganongan, regional director of the Department of Tourism, said the city's naturally cool climate positions it as an ideal refuge during the projected "super El Niño" phenomenon expected to intensify heat across the archipelago. The anticipated weather pattern is forecast to bring elevated temperatures to most of the country between late 2026 and mid-2027.
"The severe heat conditions expected during this period could actually boost tourism in Baguio as visitors seek cooler surroundings," Ganongan indicated, highlighting the competitive advantage of the city's elevation and geographical location.
The potential tourism uptick would provide economic relief to the local hospitality and tourism sectors, which have faced varying demand patterns in recent years. Hotels, restaurants, and tourist-related businesses could benefit from the anticipated influx of heat-seeking travelers.
Local authorities are reportedly preparing to capitalize on this expected surge by ensuring adequate tourism infrastructure and services are in place to handle increased visitor volumes during the critical period.
